The Problem

Our long-standing client, a building contractor specialising in MRI, CT and endoscopy fit-outs, was delivering a new MRI suite at Practice Plus Group Diagnostics, Buckinghamshire.

MRI projects demand precision. Mechanical systems must support the scanner, ensure patient safety, comply with manufacturer requirements, and fit seamlessly into the building — all under a tight schedule.

The client needed a specialist mechanical partner who could:

  • Take full ownership of the MRI mechanical works
  • Design systems that worked around site specific constraints, including the ground floor scanner location, discharge restrictions, windows, fire exits and plant areas
  • Keep the programme on track despite supply chain pressures impacting specialist equipment
  • Coordinate installations efficiently, without disrupting the wider project

The brief was simple: design it right, install it, and deliver on time.

The Solution

ICE Ltd delivered the full mechanical works on a turn-key basis, from design development through to installation and commissioning, acting as a single point of accountability throughout the project.

Every system was engineered specifically for the facility, ensuring performance, compliance and smooth installation.

Scope of works included:

  • Design, supply and installation of a helium quench pipe with thruster for a Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI, routed to suit the building layout and discharge requirements

  • Full pressure loss calculations to ensure compliance with manufacturer limits

  • Supply and installation of a dedicated MRI chiller serving the cryo-coolers

  • Installation of complete glycol pipework to the LCC unit, supported by full schematics

  • Supply and installation of a Vapac humidifier, stainless steel duct section and copper drains serving the scanner room

  • Installation of an oxygen monitoring system within the scanner room return air duct

  • Supply and installation of an emergency helium extract fan, complete with ductwork and grilles

  • Hydrosense leak detection within the Tech Room

ICE also delivered a coordinated heat recovery ventilation system across the facility:

  • Dedicated heat recovery ventilation for the MRI scanning room

  • Separate heat recovery ventilation serving the remainder of the facility

  • All ductwork routed across the plant roof with coordinated penetrations and grilles

  • All lifting equipment included

Comfort cooling, using Mitsubishi Electric equipment, was provided to key areas:

  • 3.5kW – Control Room

  • 3.5kW – Cannulation Room

  • 3.5kW – Tech Room

  • 7kW – Lobby

  • 3.5kW – Changing Rooms

  • 10kW – Examination Room

When delivery of the permanent MRI chiller was affected by the summer manufacturing shutdown, ICE sourced a temporary MRI-spec hire chiller, allowing commissioning and completion to proceed without delay. The permanent chiller was later installed during a planned changeover, avoiding disruption to the client or end user.

ICE prepared and submitted all drawings, calculations and technical documentation for approval, ensuring clarity and confidence at every stage.
