To get the most out of your air conditioning system, you need to ensure that it’s working as efficiently as possible. As with any other electrical system, air conditioning needs to be safe. Servicing and maintenance are essential to keep your air conditioning working at an optimum level. This can identify any problems early on to ensure that energy costs are controlled, and the risk of breakdowns is minimised.
How often should air conditioning units be serviced in the UK, and why is servicing important?
Do air conditioning systems need servicing regularly?
One question we’re regularly asked is how often should air conditioning units be serviced? While the frequency of servicing can vary considerably, all air conditioning units need regular servicing and maintenance to ensure they’re performing as efficiently as possible. Regular servicing and maintenance identifies any potential issues before they have the chance to develop. Left unchecked, little problems not only impact the AC unit performance, but they can also lead to costly repairs.
During the AC maintenance the system will be checked for leaks, filters will be cleaned or replaced, refrigerant levels checked, and all of the components checked to ensure they’re functioning properly. Regular servicing ensures that it cools efficiently, and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
How do I know my air conditioning needs servicing?
If you notice that your energy bill is increasing without any other clear explanation it may be an indication that your air conditioning needs servicing. If your system is cooling inefficiently or isn’t making unusual noises such as grinding or rattling, then it will need prompt attention.
Visible leaks around the unit or a buildup of ice on the evaporator coil all need to be looked at by a qualified technician as soon as possible. You may also notice unpleasant odours, weak airflow from the vents, and rapid cycling on and off. If your system hasn’t been serviced for a year, a maintenance appointment should be booked as soon as possible.
Is air conditioning servicing a legal requirement in the UK?
How often should air conditioners be serviced and is it a legal requirement? As a general rule, your air conditioning should be serviced at least once a year. Systems in more frequent use may require servicing at least twice a year.
Although it’s not a legal requirement for most air conditioning systems to be serviced, there are some regulations that do apply. Commercial systems containing over 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent to refrigerant gases that require regular inspections under the Energy Performance of Building regulations. Even though it’s not a legal requirement, regular servicing is strongly recommended.
A commercial air conditioning specialist will be able to advise about the most appropriate servicing schedule for your system, and any regulatory requirements that may apply.
