ICE undertook an air conditioning installation project for a national car detailing company. Topaz who are the world’s most exclusive detailing and paint protection film specialist, handle the largest volume of supercars anywhere in the world.

Prior to the project the space was an empty warehouse unit with administration areas.

The workshop and offices required both comfort heating and cooling.

Scope of work

Our scope of works was to provide both comfort cooling and heating air conditioning systems, whilst maintaining symmetry with other parts of the project, ensuring our installation complimented the overall look.

The client required the external plant to be located at the rear of the building, where it would be functional but not visible to the ‘high end’ clients.

How ICE helped

Our projects team attended the site recording the building layout, size, fabric, and sources of heat gain such as lighting, and specific equipment which was to be used daily.

The main sources of heat gain into the space were identified as the roof lights, door opening trends and additional intense show lighting.

Detailed heat load calculations were undertaken for both cooling and heating and our equipment was selected based on the results.

Consideration was taken within the design for each system to work under long pipework runs of over 50m, containment was selected and agreed with the client to disguise any visible pipework and cables.

In the office areas we installed 4 x single split 3.5kW air conditioning systems from the Daikin Alpha Range, the internal units were wall mounted and each were to be controlled separately by the user.

Within the Workshop/Exhibition area, we installed 2 x 20kW triple air conditioning systems, the indoor units were roundflow cassettes, each suspended to the same height as the lighting frames.

All equipment operated on a low GWP refrigerant R32. The condensing units were of the smallest footprint and height for that capacity on the market, so could easily fit in the space at the rear.

Due to the high apex roof of the warehouse, we installed de-stratification fans to push the hot air downwards when in heating. The de-stratification fans were linked to a thermostatic controller and sensors, to operate when the temperature increased above a specified set point, so the fans only ran when required.

This air conditioning installation project was designed and run by our Head of Projects, Lee Hopkins and installed by our in-house installation team, led by our onsite supervisor Daniel Bush.

Results

The project was handed over to the client with full staff training and commissioning reports.

The systems were installed to the highest of standards and are now performing well.
