When an air conditioner filter gets dirty or clogged up, it can make your AC system less efficient. This, in turn, means your unit has to work harder to achieve the desired temperature, pushing up costs as a result.
Can a dirty filter cause an AC not to cool and how do you ensure that your system is working as efficiently as possible?
How much does a dirty filter affect an air conditioning system’s performance?
When an air filter gets dirty it can significantly impact the performance of the system, so can a dirty filter cause an AC not to cool?
The air filter has a critical role in maintaining airflow within the system. It traps dust, debris and other particulate matter, preventing it from entering any further into the system and cleaning the air. When the filter is clogged, airflow is restricted. This forces the system to work harder to circulate air throughout your building. This leads to greater strain on the system and increased energy consumption.
Crucially, cooling efficiency is likely to be impacted, creating patching and inconsistent cooling. Over time, a dirty filter will cause the system to overheat, which can potentially damage critical components.
Can a dirty filter stop AC from blowing cold air?
A dirty filter can prevent your AC from blowing cold air effectively. The evaporator coil is responsible for cooling the air, and if airflow is restricted, then insufficient air might be circulated. Lack of airflow can cause the evaporator coil to become too cold, causing ice to build up. This ice buildup will negatively affect the AC’s ability to cool the air effectively. Ultimately, this can result in cold air output stopping completely.
When the filter is dirty it can also cause the system to short cycle, meaning the AC will turn on and off without completing a full cooling cycle. This increases the stress on the system, which if not addressed may lead to breakdowns and costly repairs. If a filter is completely clogged it may trip the safety mechanisms within the AC unit, shutting it down to prevent overheating.
Will cleaning my AC filter make it colder?
When your air filter is clean it allows for optimal airflow, enabling the evaporator coil to effectively cool the air. When airflow isn’t restricted it’s easier for your AC to maintain a consistent overall temperature, providing greater comfort.
If your AC has not been cooling as expected, then this may indicate your air filter is clogged and needs cleaning. Checking the filters, and cleaning and replacing them when necessary is a key part of a regular air conditioning maintenance schedule.
