When considering how many hours should AC run per day, it’s important to take into account the type of system, your own usage needs, and how efficiently the system operates.

Central AC: How many hours should central AC run per day
Central air conditioning systems are designed to cool an entire building and will usually be controlled by a thermostat. In the UK, a moderately used central AC system may run for 6-8 hours per day during the warmer months. This can vary due to a number of factors, such as the temperature setting, the property’s insulation, and seasonal factors such as warm weather.
With summertime temperatures rising and extreme heat now being an occasional feature of our weather, central AC systems may need to run for longer periods for user comfort. If your system isn’t cooling as you might expect, it can indicate issues such as poor insulation or dirty filters.
Inverter AC: How many hours should inverter AC run per day?
Inverter air conditioners are generally more energy efficient as they work by adjusting the compressor speed, rather than turning it on and off repeatedly. Inverter ACs have been developed for longer use and may be able to run for extended periods without consuming excessive energy. During the peak summer months, an inverter AC might run for 8-10 hours per day. Inverter systems can maintain a steady temperature without overworking, making them better suited for extended operation.
Split AC: How many hours should split AC run per day?
Split air conditioners tend to be used for cooling individual rooms or specific zones in a building. They don’t need to run constantly to maintain a comfortable temperature, and during a typical UK summer, a split AC system should run for 4-6 hours depending on occupation. It can run for longer periods if the room is occupied, such as in an office. As with other AC systems, factors such as insulation and outdoor temperature will also be a factor.
Is it OK to run air conditioning for 24 hours?
An air conditioning system can be run around the clock, but it’s not recommended. Constant use of your air conditioning system will put unnecessary strain on the compressor and other components. This can potentially reduce the lifespan of the system. Leaving the AC on all day can also lead to excessively cold indoor conditions.
The energy costs of running an AC around the clock are also likely to be considerable. Using a programmable thermostat can ensure the system cycles on and off as needed. Inverter and split systems should only be run during occupied hours as a more practical and cost effective solution.
