A Pharmaceutical Manufacturer based in North Wales who have held a maintenance contract with ICE for over 20 years, had a refrigeration breakdown on both run & standby systems that’s serve a 2-8C Pharma Coldroom.

With product stored in the room worth millions, it was a race against time to save the room and the product before the 8C limit is reached.

Scope of work

The call out was late on a Sunday evening and as the site currently holds a maintenance contract with ICE, they are provided with 24/7/365 emergency support.

ICE needed to arrive to the refrigeration breakdown within 4hrs, to diagnose the issue and get one of the systems back on line before the temperature mapped room reached the 8C limit.

How ICE helped

The sites maintenance technician called our “Out of Hours” call out number and requested to be put through to the “On Call” engineer. An engineer was dispatch immediately and advice was provided over the telephone to stop all access to the room and to switch off any lighting and other sources of heat gain.

The engineer arrived onsite within 2 hours of the initial call to find System 1 with a large leak on the suction line and System 2 with a ceased compressor.

The leak on System 1 was repaired and the system was pressure tested and recharged with refrigerant from site stock. The room was back operational before exceeding the deviation temperature limit of 8C.

After using all the site stock of refrigerant on the repair, more refrigerant was collected from our stores by another engineer and delivered to site.

A new compressor was ordered for System 2 and fitted the following day.

Results

Following the repairs ICE investigated why both run and standby systems failed, it was found that the major leak on one system caused the room to switch over to the backup system and on switch over the compressor failed on start up. Within days of the visit both systems were back operation with full run and standby facility reinstated. The rapid response from our Service Team saved the client millions in potentially lost product.
